Description

Although Marin Marais printed nearly 600 pièces de viole across five books, over forty additional works survive only in the Panmure Manuscripts (National Library of Scotland, MSS 9447–9476). Three volumes—MSS 9465, 9466, and 9467—preserve the earliest known pieces by Marais, almost certainly from before his first viol book of 1686. They are associated with James and Harie Maule, the music-loving Earls of Panmure, who spent extended periods in Paris in the late 1670s and early 1680s. Harie, a viol amateur, may have sought out Sainte-Colombe and the young Marais while abroad.

This edition presents the pièces de viole uniquely preserved in the Panmure Manuscripts, reproduced from Marin Marais: The Instrumental Works, 7, pp. 87–135.
