Description

Luca Marenzio's L'ottavo libro de' madrigali a cinque voci (Venice, 1598) signals a concise turn from the chromatic weave of VII a 5 toward a clearer, more dramatic style shaped by Gonzaga taste. Dedicated to Ferrante Gonzaga after Marenzio's return from Poland, the book favors homophony, crisp declamation, and cadences aligned to speech, with texts chiefly by Guarini and Tasso alongside poems circulated under Livio Celiano and Angelo Grillo. The playful triple-meter "La mia Clori è brunetta" contrasts with scene-like numbers drawn from eclogues and Pastor fido, and the closing pair "Laura, se pur sei l'aura / Perfida, pur potesti" glances back to his earlier concerted polyphony.

Luca Marenzio: The Secular Works provides the first complete modern critical edition of Marenzio's madrigals. Based on the most authoritative printed sources, and corrected through collation with all extant editions and relevant manuscripts, the series is designed equally for study and performance. Its aim is to restore this extraordinary repertory, challenging, inventive, and eminently vocal in conception, to both scholarship and the active repertoire of today's singers and ensembles.
