Description

Philip Van Wilder (d. 1553) was a central figure in the musical life of Henry VIII's court, serving as lutenist, teacher to the royal children, and eventually Gentleman of the Privy Chamber. Rising from foreign-born musician to royal favorite, he played a key role in shaping the sound world of Tudor England. His sacred works reflect both Josquin-era Netherlandish imitation and English ceremonial splendor, while his chansons combine Continental craft with transparent counterpoint. Van Wilder's music influenced English composers such as William Byrd and continued to circulate in Elizabethan and Jacobean anthologies, leaving a lasting mark on the English tradition. This volume presents his works in modern notation with original texts, prepared for both performance and study.

Issued as part of Masters and Monuments of the Renaissance, a series of critical editions of representative 15th to 17th century repertories, the volume follows rigorous yet practical editorial standards intended for libraries, scholars, and performers.
